Autumn equinox is near, when day and night briefly clasp hands and then walk on into deeper seasons. This year, Fire energy is strong; the Ninth Period is in command, and the Fire of Li will shine for the next twenty years. Fire governs brightness, visibility, and illumination—all things want to be seen, and so the word "trend" is louder than ever.
- When Fire is strong, being seen is instinct
Fire by nature rises and moves outward. Look at the rise and fall of industries in recent years: optics and imaging, entertainment, internet platforms, energy and electricity—all belong to Fire, and their voices often come quickly and shine brightly. Tech hardware, artificial intelligence, finance, machinery, and metals belong to Metal. In a year of strong Fire, Fire overcomes Metal, bringing both pressure and forging; elimination and upgrading are often separated by a thin line. Education, publishing, cultural creativity, healthcare, furniture, and textiles belong to Wood. Wood feeds Fire, so content, knowledge, and care easily become fuel for the flames—needed, but also easily consumed.
These are all "forces." When a force comes, everyone wants to stand in the light; there is nothing wrong with that. What is often wrong is mistaking the light for oneself.
- What endures being seen are those who first see themselves
Fire can illuminate external things, but it cannot shine into a person who refuses to look inward. So-called inner work is not mysterious formulas, but a few simple things: knowing what you are good at and what you are not; knowing under what circumstances you tend to lose composure and when you are especially steady; knowing which applause nourishes and which applause numbs.
This self-knowledge slowly settles into character: not rushing to take a stand, not rushing to cash in, not rushing to prove. When a trend comes, such people may be half a step slower; when the trend goes, they are often still in place, having deepened the matter by an inch. Twenty years of Fire will bring rapid change—so fast that you cannot win by chasing. What remains is usually those with an inner compass.
- Character changes thought, thought changes action, action changes destiny
This is a quiet chain of cause and effect, unassuming yet almost never failing. Character is the root, thought the trunk, action the branches and leaves, destiny the fruit. If the root is shallow, no matter how lush the branches, one wind will scatter them; if the root is deep, even if there are no flowers for a time, they will bloom again next year.
So instead of asking "Where is the next trend?" you might consider another question: "If the trend never comes, will I still do this?" The answer to this question is often more honest than any trend report. It will tell you whether what you hold is a calling or just an opportunity.
In the Fire period, the five-element flow of industries is only background music—energy, electricity, dining, entertainment, internet platforms, and optics belong to Fire; real estate, construction, agriculture, insurance, and warehousing belong to Earth; trade, transportation and logistics, tourism, communications, and aquaculture belong to Water—each has its time. The background music changes, the tune changes, but the performer is always you.
After autumn equinox, the nights grow longer. Firelight shines far but cannot warm a heart without roots. May you, in these twenty years, first light a lamp inward; that lamp need not be shown to others, it only needs to let you see yourself.
The mirror shows you as you are; the path is yours to walk. Those who first see themselves are the ones who walk far.
