Around the autumn equinox, the sun sets a little earlier. Walking past a street corner in the evening, I see office lights coming on one by one. Those in AI, tech hardware, and finance seem hardly to notice the changing sky. This year, with the fire energy strong and the ninth period upon us, fire upon fire, people's hearts easily grow urgent, and also easily bright. Urgency and brightness are, in fact, two sides of the same thing.
We often hear: personality changes thought, thought changes action, action changes destiny. This is true, but it is too neat, neat like a straight line. Real days are not straight lines; they are walked out day by day, inch by inch.
- The starting point is often not thought, but unnoticed small habits
Most people think change begins with "I've figured it out." But looking back, what truly moves first is often some very small, inconspicuous habit in our personality. For example, always rushing to answer in meetings, or setting messages aside upon receiving them, or asking someone first when facing uncertainty. These actions are too small to record, yet they repeat daily. Repeated long enough, they become posture; posture long enough, it becomes viewpoint.
So the starting point of that chain may not be in thought, but in habit. Habit first changes action, and action then rewrites thought. If you work in AI, conversing with models daily, over time you may tend to believe everything has an optimal solution; if you work in finance, watching fluctuations daily, over time you may tend to treat uncertainty as the norm. So it is with industries, and so it is with people.
- Action will turn back and rewrite thought
We are used to seeing action as the result of thought. But action also feeds thought in return. Each day you do one more small thing, and over time you begin to feel, "I am probably this kind of person." This "probably" is the trace of thought being rewritten by action.
In a year of strong fire energy, people easily magnify their habits. The urgent become more urgent, the bright more bright. Worth watching: what is the small action you repeat most this year? What kind of thought is it leading you toward?
- Day by day, that is the only way to walk
There is no shortcut in this chain. It is not a sudden enlightenment, but a little each day. Today, hold back one sentence; tomorrow, wait one more minute; the day after, think through that question yourself first. None of this is dramatic, but the days will remember.
Personality changes thought, thought changes action, action changes destiny—if read backwards, it also holds: action changes thought, thought changes personality. The two ends of the chain are actually connected.
After the autumn equinox, the nights grow longer, just right for observing your own small habits. No need to hurry, no need to be bright.
The mirror shows you as you are; the path is yours to walk. May you, in the day-to-day smallness, see the person you are becoming.
